The W9 is short and only requires some basic information about a contractor freelancer; notably name, address, and SSN. The blank is eventually submitted to the company or business that asked the contractor to fill it out. Some companies allow online submissions. However, it’s highly recommended to do it in person to prevent identity theft. In case of additional questions while completing it, consult the company’s accountant who delivered it.

A template is used by contractors to file a return with the IRS. The template guarantees that the employer won’t withhold any of the contractor’s taxes.

What is the Minimum Amount You Need to Give a W9 Form?

In some cases, a freelancer doesn’t need to fill out and submit the blank. Usually when the amount of money paid to the freelancer over the course of a year is less than $600.

What Are the Exemptions On a W9?

According to the sample instructions, there are two types of exempt payees:

  1. Corporations;
  2. Those under FATCA.

The exempt payees leave the boxes blank but enter certain codes instead. The codes for each category are listed in the instructions.
